Battle Against Prostate Cancer Just Got Stronger
Princess Margaret Hospital takes home over $360,000 for research at Prostate
Centre thanks to sell-out crowd at Harry's Spring Run-Off
TORONTO, Ontario (April 7, 2007) –
Dressed in everything from shorts to toques to business suits, a record-number of participants
– over 4,000 people – braved the cold conditions this morning to make their way to the finish
line in the second annual Harry's Spring Run-Off 8K & 5K to Fight Prostate Cancer. The result
was over $360,000 raised for prostate cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital's
internationally recognized Prostate Centre.
"We are thrilled to accept this gift today, which will help our doctors and
investigators continue their ongoing, ground-breaking research at PMH's Prostate Centre,"
stated Paul Alofs, President & CEO, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. "Events
like this are imperative for raising not only dollars, but awareness, of this little-discussed
disease."
"I'm so pleased that we had such a tremendous turn-out this morning, despite the
weather, to support Harry's Spring Run-Off and Princess Margaret Hospital," said Larry
Rosen, CEO & Chairman of Harry Rosen Inc., who led Harry Rosen's team of 47 associates in
the event. "My sincere thanks go out to the dedicated survivors, participants, volunteers,
sponsors and fundraisers who helped make today's Run such a huge success."
The 8K competitive run, one of Toronto's earliest and most storied Runs, enjoyed
participation from many elite level athletes. Leading from start to finish, Thomas Omwenga of
Kenya took first place with a time of 24:23. Megan Brown of Newmarket was the first female
finisher with a time of 28:04. Thousands more took part in the 5K walk and run.
Corporations such as HSBC Bank Canada, Deloitte, Manulife, Coppley Apparel Group and KPMG
all entered corporate teams, with Team Pepsi winning the title of Fastest Team (winning a
prize of Harry Rosen gift cards). Other awards were given out for finishers in various age
categories as well as for the Best Dressed Runner. Prizes will be handed out in the coming
weeks for Top Individual Fundraiser and Top Team Fundraisers, once the final audited
fundraising results are in.
In addition to title sponsor Harry Rosen Inc., funding for the event was generously
provided by second-time presenting sponsor HSBC Bank Canada; key sponsors Coppley Apparel
Group, New Balance Toronto and Abbott Oncology; and media sponsors The Globe and Mail and CBS
Outdoor.
