Final)
Alan's Journal
Dear Fellow Runners,
I hope your training is going well in these hot, steamy,
dog-days of August.
If it’s any consolation, we are really going hard as well!
Things are REALLY a buzz in the office, and I know I feel
like I’m hammering on at least 10 different fronts to be ready for Waterfront,
then Oasis ZooRun and the National 10K Championships 3 weeks after.
As you probably saw above, Course Director Chris Fagel
and I were with City Staff last Wednesday to get approval for a fabulous,
new Start Line on University, at Adelaide, right by the Hilton. What a
grand start it will be, zooming down University, then a left turn past
the majestic Royal York, Union Station and Hockey Hall of Fame and St.
Lawrence Market. Then we were out at 5:30am on Saturday with IAAF Class
A Measurer, Bernie Conway to re-measure and Certify the new course to
international standards. [though I must fess up to breaking training after
and celebrating with a brunch at Mars, Toronto’s landmark diner!]. The
new Start also means we eliminate the nasty 82 meters each way at the
bottom of Parliament where just after 2km you went down Parliament, then
turned left for 82m, then had a nasty U-turn before going back West to
Windermere. Now we’ll go down Parliament and make the easy right turn
going straight to Windermere.
Wednesday afternoon, Bonnie and I were up to Yee Hong Foundation
in Markham to meet with Pauline Tong and Henry Chiu at their wonderful
facility for Chinese & Japanese Seniors. This year, in addition to
participating in the Charity Challenge, they’ll be hosting our Award-winning
“Little Asia” Neighbourhood Cheering & Entertainment site at the 27km
mark.
Earlier last week, we also met with Greek Consul General
Mr. Azemopoulos and the Greek Community to plan for a “Greektown” Cheering
& Entertainment site. Stay tuned!
Anh & I also got the last of the invitation letters
out to elite athletes so they can get their visas, and we booked the tickets
for the Africans [14 from Nairobi, 8 from Addis and 1 from Asmara, for
our first-ever Eritrean athlete]. This week, we’ll also be booking tickets
for the Russians and one athlete from Belarus.
Kathryn, with input from all of us, has finished the 12-page
STWM Supplement for September issue of Get Out There magazine – and again
it will include tons of great info. By popular request, it also mentions
the return of the PICK THE CHAMPIONS contest with some great prizes if
you can pick the top 3 Men and Women in the right order for September
26th. David Brooks is doing the programming and it will go “live” later
this month.
And this is just a part of it! Charlotte and all of the
CRS team are recruiting and training the 500+ Managers we need for Race
Weekend, and the 3,200 volunteers. Charlotte will be in Chicago tomorrow,
working with the Chicago Marathon team on “people planning and logistics”.
So… remember, when you really have to push yourself to
do that 15k tempo run or hill workout tonight, or the 25k run on Sunday,
we’re pushing hard, too, so we’ll all have the most amazing experience
September 24-26th weekend!
And remember, if you want all the inside scoop, DO sign up to follow me
on Twiitter.
Seven weeks to go to “M-Day”
Hang tough…Gotta run,
Alan
