Alan's Journal
Joy and Pain! Dear Fellow Runners, “JOY” and “PAIN” are two of the words I associate strongly with our running lifestyle – often in the reverse order… “no pain = no gain”, &c. I have to share both with you this week! Our new STWM Course is truly something to be proud of, excited about, and massively JOYFUL for all of us and all of the many who have worked to make it happen. (read more in my blog http://www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com/blog/2012/07/blockbuster-course-enhancements-to-2012-scotiabank-toronto-waterfront-marathon-half-marathon/ ). Inside, I feel like Dylan’s finishing photo from Rotterdam! And my favourite son Alec called me on Sunday morning, very excited. He’d finished his first TELY10 in St.John’s, Newfoundland. He’d clocked a very nice 65:07, and he’d beaten several of his good friends and training buddies from Nautilus Club. He’d also chatted with Matt Loiselle, and Matt was similarly elated following his impressive 48:10 victory – one of the fastest times ever at the Tely10. We’ll all get to run with Matt back in T.O. in a couple of weeks at the TORONTO 10 miler. Clearly, Matt’s on track for a breakthrough performance at STWM on October 14th. And the pain, you ask? After hobbling along with inherited osteo-arthritis for a dozen years, I went to Mount Sinai last Wednesday where Dr. David Backstein did “the BIG DIG,” aka “the big cut”, and a total right-knee replacement. I know “joy” will come in the end, after lots of tough PT, and I’ll get a huge improvement in my quality of life. But this week, I have to say I’m in a twilight zone between searing pain and Percocet!! Too woozy and distracted to really focus. Marginally coherent. So….please share my JOY and spread the word, get PUMPED about the new Course and what it does to MASSIVELY improve STWM as a “big-city, world-marathon experience”. Stay focused, determined to achieve a great long-term goal, and push through a little pain along the way, and we’ll all have PBs on October 14th! There’s SO much great running to be excited about at home and abroad right now. London Olys start tomorrow, Reid (I know) leaves for Europe on Sunday. His race, along with Eric and Dylan is August 12th. Beaches Jazz Festival TUNE UP Training Run is this Sunday- I’m going to try to make it, even if it requires a wheelchair from charitable beneficiary East Toronto General! Then August 12th we can share an AMAZING day together at The Distillery. The guys will be racing in London from 6am to 8am (our time), then it’s our turn in the Toronto 10 miler & 5K at 8:30am. We’ll be sharing our CRS running life again, with the “big guys” running for one kind of medal in London, and us a TTM one in the Tdot! http://www.canadarunningseries.com/torontoten/totenDET.htm#medals Gotta head back to the couch and get this knee elevated. THANKS to everyone for your well wishes, support, and sharing the joy and the pain in a wonderful running life! … PLEASE keep in regular, daily contact via Facebook and Twitter, Alan [aka www.twitter.com/alnbrookes] Ps. We’ll be sharing more deets on STWM new course (like elevation, water station & neighbourhood cheering sites) over the next few weeks as they become available. CRS Online
