Fragile X Research Foundation of Canada
The Fragile X Research Foundation of Canada ("FXRFC") is dedicated to raising awareness of and funding research for Fragile X Syndrome ("FXS"), the leading inherited cause of mental impairment and the most common known genetic cause of autism. FXS affects 1/4000 boys and 1/ 6000 girls of all ethnic groups. Individuals with no apparent signs of this disorder can pass on FXS and sometimes a newly diagnosed individual may be the first family member to ever exhibit symptoms. FXS is only now gaining widespread attention due to the 1991 discovery of the defective gene. The FXRFC is run 100% by volunteer parents and medical professionals and provides funding for scientific research aimed at developing effective treatments and utimately, a cure. While FXS individuals have a normal life expectancy, most will need support and care for their entire lives, a key reason why a cure is so imperative.
