Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge: charity details

Rick Hansen Foundation

Bridge the Gap

Get a team together or participate as an individual and raise funds to help make Canada accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities.

The Rick Hansen Foundation works to create more accessible and inclusive communities for people with a spinal cord injury, and supports the search for a cure. The Foundation achieves its goals by connecting the people and resources that make innovation possible. Funds raised from the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon will support BC Wheelchair Sports Association's Bridging the Gap — Getting Physically Active program. This program helps people with spinal cord injury become reintegrated into the community, and regain their motivation, inspiration, independence and confidence through sport and recreation.

The first ten registrants to raise $100 for either the Half Marathon or the 5K for the Rick Hansen Foundation will receive a free race entry.

Thank you! Your support helps people with spinal cord injury, their families and their communities become healthy, through sport.

The Rick Hansen Foundation is a catalyst for positive change in the spinal cord injury (SCI) community. We work collaboratively with a wide variety of people and organizations - from caregivers to researchers - to identify the most pressing needs of people with SCI, and to create solutions that improve their quality of life.

People across Canada have been inspired to help by participating in annual Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion events. As a result, more than $7.6 million has been raised for 700 quality of life projects that have helped men, women and children living with spinal cord injury. Funds raised have also been directed to research in support of the search of a cure. In 2008, the funds raised through the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon & 5K will go towards a quality of life initiative, BC Wheelchair Sports Association's Bridging the Gap – Getting Physically Active program. This program helps people with spinal cord injury become reintegrated into the community, and regain their motivation, inspiration, independence and confidence through sport and recreation.

Two decades ago, Rick Hansen completed the epic Man In Motion World Tour (1985-87), and became a living testament to the potential of people with a disability when he wheeled 40,000-km, through 34-countries. Rick's courage and determination opened hearts and minds to the potential that lies in us all, and the Tour became a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of teamwork. Today, Rick's leadership continues to shape new possibilities for finding a cure for spinal cord injury and building a Canada that is fully accessible and inclusive.

The Rick Hansen Foundation is not a direct service provider, we work to ensure inclusive and accessible communities across Canada and support quality of life programs that benefit people with spinal cord injury (SCI). This includes support for equipment and assistive devices, education and skills development and integration back into the community after injury.
