Results & Photos >> 2006 Chip Times

Dear Half-Marathon Participants,

At the 2006 Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon, there was a technical malfunction with the timing equipment of our timing supplier Race Headquarters. Unfortunately, this resulted in approximately 1000 runners not receiving a chip starting time in the Half-Marathon event.

On behalf of the Canada Running Series and our sponsors, we extend our deepest apologies for the error. We sincerely regret any confusion and disappointment this has caused.

We are trying to ascertain the cause of this unfortunate error and are in the midst of exploring all possibilities to provide more accurate chip time results for the affected individuals. We appreciate your patience as we work through this process.

At this point, we know that as a result of the equipment malfunction with the timing boxes at the starting line, only intermittent chip starting times were recorded for runners as they crossed the starting line. ChampionChip timing is the most reliable timing equipment in the world and provides many benefits to runners over past manual timing methods, such as a free flowing finish area, and faster results following the event. However, we share your view that this timing error is unacceptable. We are in communication with Race Headquarters and other timing operators to review the timing of our event going forward to ensure that this situation never happens again.

On behalf of everyone involved in presenting the event, we want you to know how much we appreciate your participation and support and we hope that you will participate again next year. As a gesture of our regret and concern, we would like to offer affected runners a $5 discount off your registration fee for 2007. To take advantage of this discount on your online registration, please visit www.eventsonline.ca/events/crs_vanhalf/ prior to April 3, 2007 and enter the discount code "RHQCHIP" in the "Special Event Coupon Code" just above the waiver.

We will also do a draw on January 31st of all effected runners that have registered for 2007 for a $100 gift certificate for running gear.

On our results page we have also posted "Scaled Results" adjusting for the missing starting line data in the chip time of the results. The "Scaled" chip time has been calculated for those with missing data based on their placing in the run, using an equation compensating for the gaps in the starting times. The equation assumes that slower runners would have started towards the back of the starting field. We appreciate that this is far from scientific and apologize for how this error may have impacted your ability to accurately track your time.

*Please note that all overall awards and age category prizing is based on Gun Time (from the time of the starting gun to when a runner crosses the finish line), as per IAAF, Athletics Canada and BC Athletics timing regulations.

If you have any questions about the "Scaled Results" please don't hesitate to contact us at svhm@canadarunningseries.com.

In the meantime, I want to assure you that we will continue to strive to provide the safest, best event possible. We hope that you will continue to support the event and its charitable beneficiary, the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, and look forward to seeing you again next year.

On behalf of the Canada Running Series, our sponsors and our volunteers, please accept our deepest apologies and our assurances for the future.

Sincerely,

Clifton Cunningham

Important note about results:

Gun Time is the official time.
All awards are based on GUN TIME – the time from the start of the race (gun) to when you cross the finish line as per IAAF, Athletics Canada, BC Athletics, USATF, AIMS and International Awards standards.

Excerpt from the IAAF Road Race Handbook - Pg 196 RULE 240
Note: For road races and road walking events, the official time will be the time elapsed between the start gun and the athlete reaching the finish line. However, if an athlete crosses the start line after the start gun, his time elapsed between the start and finish line can be made known to the athlete but will not be considered as official time. The order in which athletes reach the finish line will be considered as the official finish position. 196 RULE 240

The Chip timing is purely for personal interest – to track your personal performance. Chip times will be shown in the results.

If there is an error with your name or age group, or your result is missing (and you were wearing a ChampionChip) – please email svhm@canadarunningseries.com.
