Wheelchair Information
We are excited to include a Wheelchair event in this year's Toronto Yonge Street 10km race. This will include both elite wheelchair racers (see rules below) and recreational wheelchair participants.
Start & Finish
Specific start & finish information will be available closer to the race date.
Recreational Participants
- This includes all wheelchair participants who do not meet the elite criteria below.
- Please note that the course time limit is 1:40:00 and all participants on the course after this time will become informed pedestrians.
- Please register for the Wheelchair event and include your estimated finishing time. We will contact you to ensure you are in the appropriate start corral.
- All wheelchair participants are required to wear a helmet.
Elite Participants
The elite wheelchair race will start before the runners and participants MUST follow these rules:
- The wheelchair shall have two large wheels and one small wheel.
- Wheelchair Dimensions:
- No part of the main body of the wheelchair may extend forward beyond the hubs of the two rear wheels
- Maximum height from the ground of the main body of the wheelchair shall be 50 cm
- No part of the wheelchair may protrude behind the vertical plane of the back edge of the rear tires
- Wheel Dimensions:
- Maximum diameter of the large wheel including the inflated tire shall not exceed 70 cm
- Maximum diameter of the small wheel including the inflated tire shall not exceed 50 cm
- Only one plain, round push-rim is allowed for each large wheel.
- No mechanical gears or levers are allowed to propel the wheelchair.
- The use of mirrors is not permitted in wheelchair track or road races.
- Only hand operated, mechanical steering devices are allowed.
- The athlete must be able to turn the front wheel manually both to the left and to the right.
- The use of fairings or similar devices specifically designed to improve the aerodynamic performance of the athlete in the wheelchair are not permitted.
- Wheelchairs will be subject to measurement and inspection before or after the event.
- It is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure that no part of their lower limbs can fall from their wheelchair to the ground or track during the event.
- It is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure that their wheelchair conforms to the requirements stipulated above. The event will not be delayed while an athlete makes adjustments to their wheelchair.
- If the Event Organizers believe that a wheelchair and/or the athlete using the wheelchair represent a safety risk they shall be authorized to disqualify the athlete from the event.
- Hand crank cycles or chairs are NOT permitted.
Elite Wheelchair Awards
$150 — 1st place male division
$150 — 1st place female division
There must be a minimum of 3 participants in the division in order for the prize money to be awarded.
