Moses Macharia mauls record field at Oasis ZooRun; Kortchaguina takes hard-fought women's race

Lioudmila Kortchaguina

TORONTO. October 18th. Kenya's Moses Macharia was the class of the field at this morning's OASIS ZooRun 10K, leading from start to finish for a convincing victory in 29:41, over compatriots Josephat Ongeri [30:20] and Pius Korir [30:41]. Toronto's Lioudmila Kortchaguina, Canada's #1 ranked Women's marathoner, won a hard-fought battle to take the women's title in 36:08 on the rolling, winding, scenic Toronto Zoo course. The women's race, which even featured some exciting hand-to-hand combat, saw the top 4 cross the line within a 20-second span: Kenya's Agnes Ngunriji claimed 2nd in 36:14; Milton's Josiane Aboungono took 3rd in 36:21; and Kingston's Paula Wiltse capped a fine year in 4th in 36:28. She was also first Masters' woman.

A record, sell-out field of over 4,100 enjoyed the excellent conditions and the fine Fall scenery of the Rouge Valley at the Toronto Zoo, as the Canada Running Series ended its 2008 season on a suitably high note. More than 2600 were entered in the OASIS ZooRun 10K presented by Reebok, another 1200 in the 5K, and more than 300 children in the CubRun. Macharia took off from the start under clear blue, sunny skies and a chilly 4 degrees, and the result was never in doubt. Today's victory concluded a fine, profitable season on the CRS circuit for the 30 -year old from Nyahururu. He won Harry's Spring Run Off Toronto 8K in April, placed 2nd at Banque Scotia 21k de Montreal, won the Sporting Life 10K in May, won the Scotia Vancouver Half in June, and placed 3rd to Ongeri at the Nissan Toronto Ten Miler in July. He will return to Nyahururu on November 15th, a job well done.

Behind the Kenyans, an excellent tussle unfolded amongst the Canadian men for final placings in Canada Running Series '08. Danny Kassap, who just returned home on Wednesday after his heart attack and near-death collapse in the Berlin Marathon on September 28th, was out to cheer on his clubmate, Paul Chafe of University of Toronto Track Club. With a strong finish, Chafe [31:21] sprinted away from Montrealers Bagdad Rachem [31:22] and Amor Dehbi [31:28] for the narrowest of victories. His first-place-Canadian finish gave him 111 points for the year, just ONE point more than Dehbi. Rachem came 3rd in Series '08 with 107 points in the closest-ever finish. "Danny said he'd come out and cheer for me if I ran the ZooRun," said Chafe. "He said I had to run and win, to keep the CRS title in the club!" Ordered to rest completely for 3 months after his heart attack brought on by ventricular fibrillation, Kassap was the Canada Running Series defending champion. He was in 5th place coming into today's contest; a likely victory would have allowed him to retain his crown. "I'm just very happy to be here at all," said Kassap, accompanied by his wife Diane.

On the women's side, Josiane Aboungono's disappointment at losing the race was mitigated by her second-place-Canadian points that made her the new CRS '08 Women's Champion, with 130 points. Nicole Stevenson, unable to race at the ZooRun after developing a nasty achilles injury at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon three weeks ago, finished the campaign in 2nd [121 points] with Kortchaguina 3rd [105 points].

The Toronto Zoo Foundation ended the day with more than $20,000 to help endangered species at the Zoo, the "Two Bears" won the Adult "Best-animal Dressed" contest, and the Frog beat the Tiger in the Kids' Costume contest.

Canada Running Series 2008 ended with a record number of over 45,000 participants in the eight-event circuit, and a record of more than $2.3 million raised for 70+ local charities in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Online registration for Canada Running Series 2009, including popular "Combo Packs", opens on Monday, November 10th. Next year will be the 20th anniversary for Canada's #1 running circuit.
