TORONTO, ON. 15 October 2005. For the third time in the Canada Running Series this year, Giitah Macharia of St. Catharines did what he had to do, then unleashed his deadly finishing kick to win the BELAIRdirect.com ZooRun 10K this morning in 30:18. Today's sprint to the line gave Macharia a one-second victory over exciting new talent, 19-year old Jean-Claude Nduwingoma of Montreal. Kenyans Abel Ondeyo and Joseph Ekuom were 3rd and 4th, with Montrealers taking the next 4 places. With race and Series titles, it was a $4,000 morning for the soft-spoken Macharia.

Megan Brown, women's winner

On the women's side, Megan Brown of Puslinch had an easier time, with a comfortable 46-second win over Tania Jones of Maple (35:33 to 36:19), followed by Shari Boyle of Toronto (36:42). Boyle's 3rd place was good enough to give her the CRS2005 Women's title. Nancy Tinari of Coquitlam was just behind (37:10)—a performance that ensured she would repeat as CRS2005 Masters Women's champ.

Conditions were almost perfect, with sunny skies and mild temperatures for the record 2,331 participants who helped raise more than $10,000 to assist the Toronto Zoo in its efforts to preserve endangered species. The Fall colours were at their best in the sunlight as the runners cruised around the 710 acres of the Zoo grounds, past many of the 5,000 resident animals. To add further to the entertainment of the morning, Guinness Marathon World Record holder, Michal Kapral of Team Reebok, aka The Joggler, made an encore, cameo appearance, joggling the 10K in 39:22.

Giitah Macharia wins BELAIRdirect.com ZooRun 10K to take CRS2004 crown

Giitah Macharia, photo by Alan Brookes All of the 2004 season was on the line for Giitah Macharia at the second annual BELAIRdirect.com ZooRun10k, and the Congolese runner from St. Catherines came through in fine style. To win the 2004 Canada Running Series title (and $2,500 in cash), he had to win, and did so convincingly in 30:15, ahead of 4 Algerians and Curtis Archibald from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The victory, on the scenic but rolling and winding course inside the Toronto Zoo, gave Macharia the crown with 144 points to Danny Kassap's 138. A second-place finish would have left him 2 points adrift of Kassap. Archibald was part of a contingent of 17 runners from Team Nova Scotia, who used the event as their Run Nova Scotia season finale.

Nicole Stevenson, photo by Alan BrookesOn the women's side, Nicole Stevenson of Toronto put in a very strong 34:12 clocking for the win, just 7 days after her disappointing 2:39 at the Chicago Marathon. Coquitlam's Nancy Tinari was second overall, and first master, with 14 year-old Stephanie Smith of Aurora 3rd in 37:08, and Christina Etter of Bedford, NS in 4th on the challenging course. Last year's defending CRS champion, Stevenson made enough points at ZooRun to place second to Lioudmila Kortchaguina in the final CRS2004 standings (150 to 138 points).

Richard Lee of Port Coquitlam won a spirited battle against Toronto's Jerry Kooymans and Jamie Black (33:07 to 33:27, and 34:36), to retain his CRS Men's Masters crown.

Lynn Kobashi's (Toronto Longboat Roadrunners) 3rd place at the Zoo in 40:48 was enough to catapult her over Angie Ferraro and Carolyn Silvey to take this year's CRS Masters' Women's title, 98 points to 93 points, to 86.

Almost 2,000 runners enjoyed a rare morning of occasional sunshine and blue skies, as they ran amongst the lions, tigers and bears to help raise monies for the protection of endangered species.
